Randolph County updates information regarding the Winchester tornado’s effects
Randolph County, Indiana – An update on the effects of the tornado that struck Winchester earlier this month was given by representatives of the Randolph County Emergency Operations Center.
The agency said that the tornado that struck Winchester and Randolph County on Thursday left 47 structures damaged and 38 people injured. Additionally, the center claimed that 60 structures had minor damage and 56 suffered serious damage.
The National Weather Service office in Indianapolis classified the tornado as an EF-3 tornado. Its estimated path length was slightly longer than 25 miles, and its wind speed was recorded at 165 mph. The center claims that the storm’s maximum route width was 700 yards in certain locations.
According to the center, the storm also damaged more than 125 utility poles, and one wind turbine, and caused 5,000 peak power outages.
This comes after the Randolph County Sheriff’s Department on Sunday downgraded its travel recommendation from a warning. Because of the hazardous driving conditions, officials stated in a post on the department’s Facebook page that speeds should be lowered.
The article stated that there are still perilous road conditions in several Winchester and rural Randolph County areas because of debris or people cleaning up or taking it off the road. “The travel advisory will stay in force until Tuesday at noon, at which point we’ll assess the situation more thoroughly.”
As previously announced by officials, Randolph Central Schools are anticipated to reopen on Tuesday following Monday’s prolonged closure.
