Driver who fled a crash scene caused another collision shortly after on I-65, resulting in fatalities
Crown Point, Indiana – A motorist traveling in the wrong direction on I-65 caused a collision that involved several vehicles, resulted in the deaths of two people, and caused delays in traffic.
It was Saturday at 12:04 p.m. when troopers were sent to the 247-mile marker on Interstate 65 to investigate a report of an SUV heading north in the southbound lanes. Two minutes later, a collision involving multiple vehicles was reported to have occurred near the 248.2 mile marker.
Upon arrival at the scene, authorities determined that the SUV, which was previously reported to have been traveling in the opposite direction, was the one that was responsible for the collision. The investigation showed the SUV crashed head-on into another vehicle, and a third vehicle struck the SUV.
The investigation also indicates that the SUV, a black Chevrolet Equinox, was previously involved in a collision on U.S. 231 in Crown Point and fled the scene. That’s when the driver entered Interstate 65 in the wrong direction and caused another collision.
The driver of the SUV was only identified as a female, and the driver of the second vehicle in the collision on I-65 was said to be a male. Both of them were declared dead at the scene, while the driver of the third vehicle was transported to a hospital for treatment of injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
At this moment, the names of the drivers who died and the injured driver have not been made public.
