The board of the Indianapolis Public Library names a new CEO

Indianapolis, Indiana – The lengthy hunt for a new CEO of the Indianapolis Public Library may have come to an end.

A resolution to name Gregory A. Hill, Sr. as Chief Executive Officer was approved by the library’s Board of Trustees during a meeting held Monday night, according to a news release from IndyPL.

According to a press statement, Hill, a veteran of the military with more than ten years of experience working for IndyPL in a variety of roles, has been acting as the library’s CEO since December 2022.

“Over his many years of service to IndyPL, Mr. Hill has demonstrated steady and sure leadership in every position he’s held,” said Hope Tribble, IndyPL Board of Trustees President. “He is uniquely suited to lead the library through the challenges it currently faces, and the Board firmly believes he will be instrumental in securing a bright future for the institution. We are delighted to appoint him CEO.”

The choice to choose Hill as CEO was made following a months-long search for a new director of the municipal library, which started in December after Dr. Gabriel Morley declined the role due to community opposition.

Protesters condemned IndyPL’s leadership and decision-making during this search.

At a city-county council meeting in January, cries for the resignation of Tribble, the president of the IndyPL board, broke out. Dr. TD Robinson left the Library Board of Trustees shortly after that.

Hill is now being praised by IndyPL for his elevation and for “effective team development leadership” and “working collaboratively with civic organizations.” Click here to view the whole press release from IndyPL announcing Hill’s appointment.

Contract negotiations are the following step in the hiring of Hill, according to IndyPL. He will formally be hired after that is resolved.
