Case of Indiana man arrested for not paying child support is rejected by the US Supreme Court
Indianapolis, Indiana – The case of an Indiana man who was imprisoned three times for unpaid child support was not taken up by the U.S. Supreme Court.
The nation’s highest court declared on Monday that it would not take Kenneth Chambers’ appeal under consideration.
Chambers alleged that when he was arrested in 2017, 2020, and 2021 for failing to pay child support, Hamilton County authorities violated his civil and constitutional rights.
Chambers filed a lawsuit against the government, the Hamilton County Sheriff, and the Hamilton County Prosecutor’s Office on grounds of false arrest, use of excessive force, common law battery, and racial conspiracy.
As a result of the state’s child support regulations, Chambers claimed in his lawsuit, “hundreds of innocent Black and Hispanic fathers, including Plaintiff, have been subjected to unconstitutional false arrests and financial punishment.”
Chambers demanded at least $20 million in monetary losses.
Both a federal appeals court and an Indianapolis federal judge dismissed his complaint last year.
