Bedford man arrested after stealing and cashing checks



BEDFORD – Ryan Lane, 24, of Bedford was arrested on a warrant this morning on charges of theft and counterfeiting after stealing checks and cashing them.

According to a probable cause affidavit, on March 9, a woman reported to Bedford police officers that someone had stolen checks from her mailbox in the 1010 block of 16th Street.

The woman could not tell police when the incident occured, but it had taken place in the past week.

The woman told police the checks were stolen and someone had  cashed them at Woodforest National Bank, inside Walmart.

The woman provided police with copies of the chased checks. All the checks were paid to the order of Ryan Lane. The total dollar amount of the cashed checks were $1,903.63. All of the checks were cashed on March 5. Another check in the amount of $1,800 was denied on March 6.

The woman contacted her bank Bedford Federal Saving and Woodforest National Bank about the fraudulent checks.

Bedford Police detectives contacted Woodforest National Bank and secured the bank’s video footage of the transactions.

On March 11th, Bedford Federal Savings officials contacted Bedford Police requesting them to be listed as a victim of the crime after they reimbursed the woman for a total of $1903.63 for the fraudulent checks.

Police attempted to contact Lane several times about the alleged crime but he would not talk to police.

The information was forwarded to the Lawrence County Prosecutor’s Office and a warrant was issued for Lane’s arrest.
