Indiana Department of Natural Resources investigating shooting of bald eagle in Dubois County

Dubois County, Indiana – In Dubois County, a bald eagle was shot and killed on Saturday night.
According to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, early evidence indicates that the incident took place on February 25.
The DNR stated that the eagle was probably dining close to a road north of County Road 300 North, close to the intersection of 175 East, before the shooting occurred.
Overhunting, habitat degradation, and pesticide use have traditionally had an effect on bald eagle populations.
As a result, Congress passed landmark legislation like the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act in 1940 to safeguard the species.
Despite the fact that the species is no longer considered endangered, federal protections for the birds of prey are nonetheless rigidly upheld.
For a first offense, violating this federal law carries a penalty of up to $100,000 in fines, up to one year in jail, or both. With a second offense, the penalty is much worse and becomes a felony.
