Female critically injured after being hit by train near Indianapolis airport
Indianapolis, Indiana – Firefighters report that a woman was struck by a train on Saturday morning close to the Indianapolis airport, leaving her in critical condition.
The female’s identity and age have not yet been disclosed.
Wayne Township firefighters were summoned to the 1500 block of Research Way at 6:30 on Saturday morning in response to a report of an injured person who may have been trapped beneath a train. That location is close to the Indianapolis International Airport, along West Washington Street.
The woman was resting on the tracks when a train came, according to Captain Eric Banister, a public relations officer with the Wayne Township Fire Department.
The female refused to move when the conductor saw her and honked his horn. The approaching train then struck her, sending her flying 40 feet into a gully next to the tracks.
According to Banister, in order to get onto the rails, descend into the gorge, and retrieve the girl, firemen had to perform a lengthy rope rescue.
She had injuries, therefore she was sent to a hospital. When last reported, her status was listed as critical.
Information about the precise cause of the accident is being gathered by investigators.
