Governor’s race in Indiana: Democrats label the GOP’s choice for lieutenant governor as risky
Indianapolis, Indiana – On Tuesday, Jennifer McCormick, the Democratic nominee for governor, stated that she was not shocked that Micah Beckwith, the Republican nominee for lieutenant governor, had won.
According to McCormick, voters in Indiana should give careful thought to the responsibilities of lieutenant governor and evaluate Beckwith’s suitability for the position. Her remarks were made three days following Beckwith’s close victory over Julie McGuire, Mike Braun’s chosen running mate, at the Indiana Republican Party Convention.
“I was at the Statehouse for four years. I saw what was happening with the Republican Party,” she said. “There was nothing that happened last weekend that surprised me. Not one bit of it surprised me.”
McCormick and Mike Schmuhl, the chair of the Indiana Democratic Party, cited remarks made by Beckwith in which he said that God had instructed him to send demonstrators to attack the US Capitol on January 6, 2021. Additionally, they mentioned Beckwith’s part in a contentious, transient book reshelving initiative at the Hamilton East Public Library. Schmuhl claimed that Beckwith won the convention and Braun lost.
“Mike Braun has fashioned himself for years as a can-do businessman and yet he couldn’t get this done,” Schmuhl said. “This is one of the biggest responsibilities for a governor is to pick your running mate, to pick your governing partner, and he came up short.”
Since Beckwith’s nomination, McCormick claimed to have heard from moderate Republicans who would like to back her. She added that the Democratic Governors Association had also endorsed her campaign. She claimed that compared to early in the campaign, resources are now flowing into her campaign with greater ease.
The campaign of Braun issued the following statement in reaction to McCormick’s remarks:
“Through their Freedom and Opportunity agenda, Mike Braun and Micah Beckwith have a vision to make Indiana the most entrepreneurial state and improve the lives of Hoosiers, while Jennifer McCormick is still trying to convince someone, anyone, to be her liberal running mate. McCormick’s troubles are rooted in the fact that she’s a dishonest progressive who can’t even tell Hoosiers who she voted for in previous presidential elections, which even Democrats admit is embarrassing.”
In fact, McCormick claimed, she has selected a running mate, whom she will unveil at a press conference on Thursday afternoon. Although she didn’t provide many specifics, she described the individual as “a person of integrity.”
July 13 was designated for the state Democratic Party convention.
