I-465 northbound will soon reopen following a 21-day suspension

Indianapolis, Indiana – If you can wait just one more week, the lengthy traffic jams in Indianapolis’ downtown should significantly shorten.
By the beginning of the morning rush on August 5, the Indiana Department of Transportation anticipates having reopened northbound I-465 between I-65 and I-70.
On July 12, the southeast interstate route was closed for joint, pavement, and bridge deck maintenance. One of the busiest routes in central Indiana was closed for three weeks, and northern traffic was diverted via downtown Indianapolis on I-65 and I-70.
The project resulted in the closure of the following ramps:
• Northbound and southbound I-65 to northbound/eastbound I-465
• Eastbound and westbound Washington St./U.S. 40 to northbound I-465
• Eastbound and westbound Brookville Rd./U.S. 52 to northbound I-465
• Southbound Shadeland Ave. to northbound I-465
• Southeastern Ave./Old U.S. 421 to northbound I-465
• I-74 westbound to northbound I-465
• Northbound and southbound Emerson Ave. to eastbound I-465
• Northbound Shadeland Ave. to northbound I-465
Drivers were instructed by INDOT’s approved detour to return to northbound I-465 by using eastbound I-70 and northbound I-65. Since the work started, anyone who has driven through downtown has seen heavy traffic jams due to the increased number of detours.
Because of the closure, INDOT employees can now work without worrying about cars approaching them. Seven days a week, they are able to work nonstop, including at night.
The alternative, according to INDOT, would have involved isolated, spaced-out interstate closures that would have caused frustration for both work crews and drivers over a far longer period of time.
This was the start of the second of six stages for the repair of I-465. The project will be finished in its entirety in the spring of 2025.
