Marion County elects Deborah Whitfield as its first Black mayor

Marion County, Indiana – One of the many fiercely contested mayoral contests taking place in central Indiana is going to make history.
In Marion County history, Democrat Deb Whitfield will be the first Black mayor. She won over Deputy Mayor Dave Hofmann to take over as Lawrence’s next mayor.
According to Indiana Democratic Party Chairman Mike Schmuhl, Whitfield conducted a broad campaign centered on Lawrence’s future.
Whitfield will take over as mayor from Republican Steve Collier, who decided not to seek for a third time.
After 96% of Marion County’s polling places reported results, Whitfield received roughly 53% of the vote.
“This has been an awesome opportunity,” Whitfield said. “I receive it humbly. I give thanks to God and every one of you out there.”
Following her win, the Indiana Democratic Party released a statement:
“In this election, Lawrence voted for Deb Whitfield and a brighter future for families and workers across the city.”
