More than 30 years after being discovered in Greenwood, human remains were identified
Johnson County, Indiana – The Johnson County Coroner’s Office recently declared that the remains of a person discovered in Greenwood in 1993 have been positively identified.
The remains were identified as those of Michael Benjamin Davis, a South Carolina resident who was in his mid-20s when he passed away, according to a news release. The cause and method of death have been ruled unknown, despite the case having long been suspected of being a homicide.
The remains were first discovered in 1993 in Greenwood, close to Interstate 65, on the site of the Otte Golf Course. According to the press release, the Othram Forensic DNA Testing Laboratory, the University of Indianapolis, and the Greenwood Police Department collaborated to identify the remains through a “significant process that was made.”
The announcement stated, “Until our Coroner’s Office revisited it using updated DNA and genealogy procedures, this case remained cold with no leads.” “We found possible family members after months of emails, calls, and support from various law enforcement agencies across the U.S. and Canada.”
This was the only known unidentified set of remains in Johnson County, according to the announcement.
