One person is murdered when an ancient People Mover’s beam collapses close to IU Health Methodist Hospital

Indianapolis, Indiana – An industrial accident near IU Health Methodist Hospital early on Saturday morning resulted in the death of a male construction worker, according to police.

The male’s age or name has not yet been made public.

According to Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Officer Samone Burris, officers were called to the intersection of West 16th Street and North Senate Avenue shortly before five in the morning on Saturday in response to a report of an industrial accident.

Authorities report that one male has passed away. If anyone else was hurt in the incident, it has not been disclosed by the investigators.

From the former IU Health People Mover tram, a beam had fallen into the road. 2019 saw the closure of the People Mover following 16 years of operation.

This was stated in a statement by IU Health representatives.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of this valued construction worker. We extend our condolences to the family and coworkers during this difficult time.
A portion of the former people mover track collapsed while being removed this morning over 16th Street. What led to the collapse is being investigated. The section of 16th Street between Missouri Street and Senate Ave will remain closed during this investigation. “ Indiana University Health

When the old people mover track was being removed this morning over 16th Street, a section of it fell. The cause of the collapse is being looked into. Throughout this inquiry, the area of 16th Street between Missouri Street and Senate Avenue will stay closed.

According to Indiana University Health IMPD, the Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Administration has been notified and officers are working to ensure that the work zone surrounding the area is safe for workers.

A fence has been put up around the scene as the police investigate.
