People are invited to the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site to honor former President Jimmy Carter
Indianapolis, Indiana – Hoosiers are welcome to visit the museum grounds at the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site to honor the late President Jimmy Carter.
Six flowers had already been placed on the former president’s medallion on the Harrison Home’s side of the Presidential Promenade early on Monday morning.
A museum representative expressed their sympathies to Carter’s family in a statement on Sunday evening.
The statement read, “As we endeavor to commemorate President Carter’s noble contribution to our nation, we also recognize and applaud the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library & Museum for their efforts in conserving his memory and teaching the next generation about the value of public service in strengthening the American system of self-government.”
The public is welcome to explore the museum’s grounds without an entry fee. President Carter can be honored at any time of day by anyone who wants to.
Although the museum is devoted to the 23rd president, Charles Hyde, the site’s president and CEO, says they wanted to provide a place for people to pay tribute to the 39th president.
Hyde remarked, “We just think it’s important to pay respect to another American president.” Out of the more than 500 million people who have lived in the United States, there have only been 45 presidents in the nation’s history. Thus, this is how we can express our gratitude to a past president.
Hyde claims that when he heard the news on Sunday afternoon, it made him upset.
According to Hyde, President Carter established a solid reputation for himself as the President of the United States and for his post-presidential accomplishments. He left behind a truly amazing legacy for the nation.
Black bunting was strung throughout the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site late Monday morning. In observance of Carter, the museum says it will now begin a 30-day period of mourning.
William Henry Harrison, the grandfather of Benjamin Harrison and America’s ninth president, was the first to pass away while in office.
Following the passing of President William Henry Harrison, many customs surrounding grieving were created.
