Starting July 1, all Indianapolis parks are becoming smoke free

Indianapolis, Indiana – As of July 1^st, plenty of new laws are coming into effect and one of them is smoking free parks in Indianapolis.

As we approach the Fourth of July and expect fireworks from all over the places, there will be a plenty of smoke in the air. But, according to a new law the parks in Indianapolis are now becoming smoke free.

The law goes into effect Wednesday, July 1^st.

District 7 Councillor John Barth proposed this law with the idea of protecting the green areas in the city and safeguarding the health of Indianapolis residents.

“Our city’s parks have been a refuge during the pandemic and use will continue to expand as we move into the summer. This ordinance ensures that we put the health of our children and families first,” Barth said.

One Indianapolis mother who usually brings her asthmatic son in a local park agrees with the law and she think everyone will agree as this is something majority of the people will agree on.

“My son is asthmatic. Almost on a extreme degree. We’ve had to fight pneumonia and things like that. So, I think it’s good for him, who actually enjoys the park, to not have to deal with complications attributed from smoking,” she said.

Indy Parks put a sign on the entrance on every park. The first fine for smoking is $100, but a court ticket and fine of up to $7,500 for subsequent violations will apply.

Berth added that the idea behind this law is putting the public’s health in front of everything else.
