Tanker truck driver killed in horrific collision in northern Indiana
Nappanee, Indiana – According to state police, a straight tanker truck driver lost his life in a horrific collision on a road outside a northern Indiana trailer manufacturing on Friday afternoon.
After the coroner in Elkhart County confirms a positive identification, the driver’s name will be made public.
Around 12:55 p.m. on Friday, there was a collision on Tomahawk Trail next to ATC Trailers. That’s west of Nappanee, which is a 6,900-person city that lies on the boundary between Kosciusko and Elkhart counties.
Investigators believe that when the tanker truck went off the road and lost control, it was traveling south on Tomahawk Trail. The truck tumbled onto its right side and slid south as it returned to the road. As it slid, the vehicle caught fire. It then twisted and came to rest in the northbound lane, facing north.
State police did not specify what kind of combustible material the tanker vehicle was transporting. At the scene of the collision, an Indiana Department of Environmental Management representative arrived.
The state police were invited to help with the investigation by the Nappanee Police Department.
The distance between Nappanee and downtown South Bend is roughly forty minutes by car.
