Variable speed restrictions on the southeast side might allow 465 traffic to move at a maximum of 35 mph

Indianapolis, Indiana – There will soon be variable speed restrictions on I-465.

Starting “on or after” September 10, the Indiana Department of Transportation will put the idea into practice along the I-465 corridor on the southeast side.

Work zones, crashes, traffic, and weather all affect the typical 55 mph speed limit. According to INDOT, there will be 5-mph drops or increases in the speed limit.

Digital signage has already been installed on both sides of I-465, every half a mile. Conditions may allow for speed limits as low as 35 mph.

With fewer stop-and-go scenarios and a more steady flow of traffic, INDOT anticipates that the modification will aid in the management of traffic congestion.

Drivers should be especially aware of the state of the road and the possibility of speed limit changes because police will enforce the posted speed limit.

The action is a component of a larger Southeast Transportation Systems Management Operations (TSMO) plan to control traffic during peak hours.

Ramp metering was introduced to the Southeast earlier this year by the same program. TSMO enhancements also include dynamic message boards that alert drivers to various conditions and potential risks on the road.
