Veterans can use a social club in Hendricks County

Avon, Indiana – Veterans in Hendricks County have a place to congregate and socialize thanks to a mental health professional.
Veterans can visit the Mental Health of America office in Avon on Fridays from 11 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at 75 Queensway Drive.
“We decided to create a program specifically for veterans in the social club because the last data that we’ve seen said 50% percent of suicides in Hendricks County were veterans,” Executive Director Lael Hill said.
On Wednesdays, everyone is welcome to visit the social club. Nearly a year has passed since the safe space opened. By offering free mental health resources, the intention is to assist individuals in bettering their quality of life. The ability to connect and be surrounded by caring individuals is what matters most.
Expect a complimentary hot meal when you arrive. There are sections where individuals can converse, read, play games, produce art, and even perform music.
“We decided we needed to provide a community service just for them that looks a little different than your traditional therapy,” Hill explained.
In an effort to promote both mental and physical wellness, Mental Health America of Hendricks County will be “walking for the health of it” this weekend. It will take place in Brownsburg’s Williams Park.
Beginning on Saturday at 9 a.m. is the 5K run/walk. A children’s race, a mile-long memory walk, and a virtual run will also be included.
After the race, a free health fair will start. Expect free health checks, freebies, food trucks, and a bounce house for attendees.
