The Indianapolis DPW approves a proposal to lessen unauthorized parking

Indianapolis, Indiana – The Public Works Committee in Indianapolis approved a plan on Thursday night in an effort to lessen the quantity of unpermitted parking all across the city.

The proposal, named Proposal 202, 2023, seeks to encourage ParkIndy to issue more penalties for stationary infractions on Indianapolis streets. According to the committee, these automobile offenses include parking in:

• Bike lanes,
• Fire lanes,
• Prohibited parking areas, and
• Crosswalks

In addition to making Indy’s streets safer, Public Works claimed that the initiative aims to boost ParkIndy’s financial situation.

“Currently, ParkIndy receives a portion of revenue collected for specific types of tickets that have been issued at parking meters,” a DPW news release said. “The new proposal would allow ParkIndy to share revenue with the city for all tickets issued, incentivizing increased enforcement of non-metered parking violations.”

The primary objective, according to DPW Director Brandon Herget, is safety.

“Councillors and residents have asked our department to address a recurring bicycle and pedestrian safety concern: vehicles illegally parking within bike lanes and crosswalks, causing an unsafe commute for those reliant upon multi-modal infrastructure,” said Herget.

According to DPW, the plan will now be submitted to the full council for discussion on August 14.
