Delaware County Sheriff: pickup collides with semi, killing one and injuring two as a result of deer in the path
Muncie, Indiana – A pickup truck struck the rear of a semi that had slowed to a crawl because of several deer crossing the road, resulting in one fatality and two injuries.
The collision occurred in the Muncie area at about 7:17 a.m. on Monday, according to the Delaware County Sheriff’s Department. It included State Road 67 and Bell Creek Road.
Police were informed by a witness that several deer were crossing State Road 67, causing several cars to slow down to prevent running into the animals. When the witness saw the incident, they were pulled over on the south side of the road after having already struck one of the deer.
Witnesses said that because of the deer in the road, a Dodge truck was traveling at a pace of about five miles per hour when it failed to spot the semi. The sheriff’s department claims that at that point, the Dodge struck the back of the semi “at a high rate of speed.”
According to the department, a big wrecker was required to free the truck that got stuck beneath the semi’s back end.
The truck held three persons. The passenger was taken in serious condition to a hospital, while the driver was declared dead at the spot.
According to the sheriff’s office, a passenger in the rear of the truck was also sent to a hospital but managed to get out of the Dodge on their own.
The deceased’s identity has not yet been made public while the family is being notified.
