Fort Wayne mayor sentenced to a suspended jail term of 365 days for driving a vehicle while intoxicated last month
Fort Wayne, Indianapolis – The 70-year-old Fort Wayne mayor, Tom Henry, is most certainly one of the most popular and beloved mayors in Indiana, but as any other regular person, he is required to follow all the laws.
Early in October, Henry was involved in a crash, and right after the incident, he was arrested. According to current Indiana law, the legal alcohol limit is 0.08, but on October 8, it turned out that Henry was driving while intoxicated, and his blood-alcohol level was 0.152 after he was arrested.
Meanwhile, Henry pleaded guilty. He said at court that he was driving home from a fundraiser event that took place at the Fort Wayne theater, where he drank “too many glasses of wine”. Per the first responders’ arrest report from October 8, the mayor was swaying, argumentative, and had slurred speech.
Henry was sentenced this week, on Thursday. A judge sentenced the mayor to a suspended jail term of 365 days.
As part of the plea agreement, Henry’s driving privileges are suspended for another 65 days. He is not allowed to have any alcoholic beverages and also must submit to random drug and alcohol testing.
In addition, he was ordered to pay $390.90 to the other driver involved in the crash and pay the City $2,776.04 in restitution.
Henry, 70, is currently in his fourth term as mayor of Fort Wayne and is seeking re-election for a fifth term.
