Small plane crashes in a pond after takeoff from Indianapolis Regional Airport, pilot remains uninjured
Hancock County, Indiana – Emergency crews responded to a small plane crash on Friday morning after a single-engine Cirrus with a V-tail was found in a pond near Indianapolis Regional Airport.
The crash took place on the grounds of a Carvana used car dealership located off Mt. Comfort Road, just to the north on Interstate 70, at around 8 in the morning.
According to the Indiana State Police, whose crews also responded to the scene, the pilot, who was identified as 54-year-old Timothy Borrup, remained uninjured. There were no other people on the plane at the time of the crash.
When talking to investigators, the pilot informed them that he had just taken off from the Indianapolis Regional Airport and was headed to Florida at the time of the crash. He had just taken off from the airport and was attempting to gain altitude when the plane began to sputter and stall, according to what he stated. When Borrup engaged the emergency system, a parachute was deployed from the front of the plane. At this point, the plane had already started to nose up and lose power. The pilot remained inside the plane, which safely glided down to the ground, landing in a retention pond on the property of Carvana.
Several agencies are investigating the cause of the crash, including the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration.
