Driver of a Noblesville bus prevents kid from being struck by automobile that blows through stop arm
Noblesville, Indiana – A school bus driver in Noblesville is being honored for saving a pupil from being struck by a car while crossing the street.
In a Facebook post, Noblesville Schools stated that Walt Edwards, the bus driver, prevented a youngster from being hit by a car that disregarded the stop arm of the bus thanks to his “quick thinking.”
“Shout out to driver Walt Edwards, whose quick thinking stopped a student from crossing the street just as a car blew past the school bus stop arm,” the post read. “The car’s driver was caught on camera and will be prosecuted. Our 100+ drivers travel over a million miles a year, and have extensive training to ensure students are transported to and from school safely.”
The district’s post praising Edwards was also shared by the Noblesville Police Department, which commented, “Excellent work, Walt! I appreciate you keeping the students secure. NPD is pleased to have such close collaboration with our school transportation staff. Although people’s lives can be hectic at times and they have obligations, this does not justify being careless when it comes to bus stops. STOP if the stop sign is out!
Noblesville police have issued the driver a citation. Their identity is still a secret.
The Indiana Department of Transportation website provides useful information from the Indiana State Police to help drivers remember traffic laws.
The Indiana State Police’s school bus statutes are as follows:
• Two-lane roadways: If a school bus stops on a two-lane road, the red flashing lights are activated, and the stop arm is extended, ALL motorists must stop.
• Multi-lane roadways with NO barrier between lanes: When a school bus stops on a multi-lane roadway without a barrier, the red flashing lights are activated, and the stop arm is extended, ALL motorists must stop.
• Multi-lane roadway with a grassy and/or concrete barrier: When a school bus stops, the red flashing lights are activated, and the stop arm is extended, only vehicles behind the bus MUST stop. Vehicles that are approaching from the opposite side are NOT required to stop.
