Indianapolis, Indiana – The city of Indianapolis will host its first “Gun Free Zone” at a weekend music festival, the communications director for the mayor said on Wednesday.

Weezer and Jason Isbell will serve as the festival’s headliners on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Each night from 1 to 10 p.m., there are three stages for the festival at Garfield Park. East Raymond Street, Shelby Street, and East Southern Avenue are all about the city park.

The city intends to demonstrate “innovative security technology” to establish the “Gun Free Zone” at the WonderRoad concerts during a news conference on Thursday afternoon.

In May, Mayor Joe Hogsett initially revealed his intentions to back organizations pushing for the designation of public gatherings as “Gun Free Zones.” His plan to lessen violence included it.

According to a press release from the communications director, the Democratic mayor will talk about the “new policy allowing private event hosts or promoters to designate ‘Gun Free Zones’ on leased-out public property during special events, allowing the City to help enforce the rules.”

Frank Mascari, a Democrat on the council, Steve Lindecke, the chief operating officer of the event production company Elevation Group, Anil Chitkara, the founder of Evolv Technology, and Deputy Chief Michael Wolley of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department are all scheduled to attend the news conference at 2 p.m. on Thursday at Garfield Park.

In order to deploy weapons detection systems at the entrances to Perry Meridian and Southport high schools by the middle of September, Evolv Technology has inked a deal with Perry Township Schools.

Tickets for the event are still available. For adults, Saturday tickets start at $125.02 and Sunday tickets at $75.80. Adult weekend tickets begin at $210.03. Only VIP seats remain for Saturday.

Organizers of WonderRoad announced on Tuesday that there is no more on-site parking.
