Fishers is seeking to acquire 994 acres in Hamilton County

Fishers, Indiana – 994 acres in the southeast portion of Hamilton County are being attempted to be annexed by the city government of Fishers.

The proposed annexation region is situated south of 113th street and east of Florida Road. It is primarily made up of housing subdivisions. It stretches southeast to Flat Fork Creek Park and East 101st Street, and east to the county boundaries of Hancock and Madison.

Joe Olexa resides in the annexation area in the Flat Fork subdivision. Seven years ago, he relocated there to get away from the bustle of Fishers’ downtown. “It was pretty desolate when we first moved out here, but I always like to say we wanted to go to be where the puck was going, not where the puck was, and, since we moved out here seven years ago, there has been tremendous growth as you can see.”

“We lived in Fishers before we moved out here. We have great public services from Fishers, so a little extra taxes for great services is worth it.”

The city’s public hearings over the project are almost over. Three additional hearings will take place in Fishers at the theater of the Fishers City Hall and Art Center: Monday, 4:30–6:30 p.m.; Tuesday, 9–11 a.m.; and Wednesday, 4-6 p.m.

If the plan is approved, the city would be in charge of stormwater management and snow removal, while Fishers police would be in charge of monitoring the annexed territory. Fishers claims that the community already receives sanitary and fire services from them.

If annexation is accepted, locals may be eligible to vote in municipal elections and receive discounted admission to city parks.

Before the end of 2024, the city hopes to approve the annexation ordinance. According to a planned timeframe, the ordinance will go into force in June 2025 after an appeals period the following spring.

Tax implications would initially appear in 2026.
