Following a five-vehicle collision on the northeast side of Indianapolis, IMPD begins a fatality investigation

Indianapolis, Indiana – Following a car-related disturbance on the northeast side of the city on Friday night, Indianapolis metro police are looking into the death of a man.
At about 4:48 p.m., officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were dispatched to the 10500 block of East 38th Street in reference to a reported personal injury collision.
According to the IMPD, officers were notified during the trip that six automobiles engaged in a previous disturbance had collided. Police then verified that the disturbance involved only five automobiles. The sixth damaged car they discovered at the scene had been involved in a different collision than the one that happened on Friday night on 38th Street.
In a wooded area close to the crash scene, police found an adult male with injuries consistent with a gunshot wound. According to IMPD, the person was declared deceased at the scene. On Saturday, investigators revealed that the victim may have self-inflicted the gunshot wound.
The victim’s cause of death and his role in the collision were still unknown as of Saturday’s most recent IMPD update. It remained unclear on Friday night if the victim’s death was due to a gunshot wound or other injuries he may have received in the collision, according to IMPD.
Investigators reported finding a pistol at the site, close to the deceased.
Five additional individuals were hurt in the collision as well. According to IMPD, all of them were sent to nearby hospitals in stable condition.
Out of caution, IMPD put a nearby daycare center on lockdown as it investigated the collision and shooting. After confirming that the incident did not present a continuing threat to the neighborhood, police subsequently lifted the lockdown.
Information that suggested a 2-year-old was involved in the collision was also sent to IMPD at some point during its inquiry. The child was located with the assistance of the IMPD’s urban search and rescue squad, emergency response group, and drone unit.
In the end, police concluded that the 2-year-old in question was not a participant in the collision. Officers determined that the child was in the family’s possession and safe.
The disruption that ultimately led to the crash and potential gunshot is still being investigated by investigators. IMPD has not confirmed whether any arrests have been made as of the publication of this article.
While IMPD looked into the shooting, 38th Street between Tribley and Long Wharf Drives was closed for hours. In order to determine whether any powerlines were damaged, AES Indiana technicians also arrived on the spot.
On Friday night, IMPD detectives scoured the crash area for evidence, talked to witnesses, and looked over security camera footage. However, IMPD Public Information Officer Tommy Thompson stated that in order to even begin to piece together what precisely transpired on Friday on 38th Street, detectives will want the community’s help.
“A family is in mourning, and it’s devastating.” I have no idea what caused this. It makes no difference. If a firearm was used against this person, we don’t know,” Thompson stated. “We have no knowledge. We simply don’t know. The community is involved. The community coming forward has resulted in an arrest and the capture of a suspect with a firearm this year alone. We don’t know, but what is important is our strong integration into the community and our relationship with IMPD. The community is necessary. We cannot accomplish this alone. And it will take a lot of effort if the community doesn’t step forward.
Both accident investigators and IMPD homicide detectives arrived on the scene to examine the incident. An investigation was also requested by the Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency.
When the individual was discovered dead in the woods off of 38th Street, the Marion County Coroner’s Office will assist in determining the precise cause and manner of death. The name of the deceased will be made public by the coroner’s office after his family has been duly informed of his passing.
IMPD continues to urge anybody with information on the event to get in touch with Detective Lottie Jones via email at [email protected] or by calling (317) 327-3475.
