Former Indiana councilman still on the run and suspected of committing sex crimes

Indianapolis, Indiana – A former Madison County councilor is wanted for alleged child sex crimes, and the Indiana State Police and US Marshals Service are still looking for him.

There is an arrest warrant out for 55-year-old Steve Sumner, also known as Craig. Sumner is accused of failing to appear, molesting children, rape, engaging in sexual activity with a child, sexual battery, and child sexual abuse.

Investigators think Sumner has visited the region surrounding Gatlinburg, Tennessee, and may still be there. Investigators claim that Sharon Bailey Wood Barker, a girl who is 5’7″ and weighs 125 lbs and has blonde hair that may have been dyed, is helping Sumner.

Sumner resigned from his position on the Madison County Council in May 2021, according to prior accounts, some months after the initial allegations were brought in December 2020.

Sumner was accused of touching a girl indecently and engaging in sex acts with her. He was charged with giving her alcohol as well. He had pictures and videos of a “young nude female” on his phone, which investigators uncovered. The images were apparently shot of the victim in 2019 and 2020, according to court records.

According to court records, Sumner’s case was scheduled for a hearing on September 5.
