Indianapolis, Indiana – The 16-year-old African elephant Zahara is pregnant, according to a Monday announcement from the Indianapolis Zoo.

She has been pregnant for 22 months, and she is already 15 months along.

Early October is when her calf is due. This will be the first elephant from either Africa or Asia to give birth via artificial insemination to a mother who was also conceived using this method.

According to the press release, the calf will bring the Zoo herd’s generation count up to three. Ivory, Zahara’s mother, is 41 years old.

Of the five-elephant herd in the zoo, Zahara is the youngest elephant.
