Ice rink opens outside of Gainbridge Fieldhouse

Indianapolis, Indiana – The Elevance Health Ice Rink, the newest winter attraction in Downtown Indianapolis, opened for business on Sunday morning at Bicentennial Unity Plaza.

Located directly outside of Gainbridge Fieldhouse, the NHL-sized rink has temporarily taken the place of the basketball court. Throughout the winter, the plaza will keep serving wine and beer as concessions. On the plaza, Pacers Sports and Entertainment will also have a holiday tree.

Danny Lopez, vice president of corporate communication and external relations, said they want to establish new customs downtown.

“We (want to) pull this area down this quadrant of downtown together,” Lopez said. “Really connect up our near east side neighborhoods through downtown, and we’ve done that. So this amenity is great.”

Back in 2022, the Pacers’ home arena was scheduled to undergo renovations, and this included the rink.

Lopez believes the effort demonstrates that they are engaged in activities beyond sports.

“The stuff that’s happening in this building and all the energy that’s on this plaza is just sort of culminating on this,” Lopez said. “We’ve been talking about this for a long time. We’re really excited to get this open.”

Skating usually costs $11. Saturday and Sunday entrance is $13 instead of $12. Renting skates costs $4.

Ninety-minute time blocks are used to divide up sessions. Skaters are encouraged to purchase their tickets online by officials. Tickets can be purchased walk-up, subject to availability.
