Indianapolis, Indiana – The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department reports that a suspect in an altercation was hospitalized following a police shooting on Saturday morning on the far east side of Indianapolis.

A confrontation occurred close to the entrance of the Bubbaz Bar and Grill in the 10000 block of East Washington Street, near Mitthoefer Road, just before two in the morning, according to police. The altercation involved an off-duty IMPD officer. A man was hurt when shots were fired inside the bar.

The off-duty officer tried to diffuse the situation, according to IMPD Public Information Officer William Young, but someone fired rounds in the officer’s direction. At that point, the cop opened fire on the supposed suspect.

The suspect was transferred in critical condition to a hospital.

Two persons were shot in the incident, according to the police. A man was discovered at the site with gunshot wounds, but he drove himself to a hospital. His condition was last reported to be critical.

Later, at a house in the 2800 block of Carla Court, a female with gunshot wounds was discovered at roughly 2:30 a.m. on Saturday. That is seven minutes from the bar in the neighborhood. She had been injured during the initial gunfire at the bar, investigators at the scene discovered.

After being brought to a hospital, her condition was reported to be stable.

In 2023, there will be ten police shootings in Indianapolis. Young commented on the rise of police shootings in the city, “It’s somewhat disturbing. People are getting more brazen, as you can imagine. This is a very rewarding job, however, it is a very dangerous job. Officers leave home, they leave their families every day and don’t know whether (they’re) going to come back home or not.”

The suspect in the event, as well as the identities and ages of the two who were shot, have not been made public. No cops or uninvolved parties were hurt, according to IMPD. The neighborhood is not under any persistent threat.

An administrative leave has been imposed on the cop who fired his firearm. The offending officer, according to IMPD, was donning a bodycam.

The IMPD Homicide Office’s number to report information regarding the shooting is 317-327-3475.
