Indianapolis, Indiana – According to police, a man was detained on Friday in relation to the shooting death of 27-year-old Emily Willis on August 28.
Murder and gun possession as a major violent felon are two felonies that Deonta Nelson, 34, is accused of committing.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department reports that on August 28 at approximately 9 p.m., officers were sent to the intersection of East New York Street and North Rural Street in response to a complaint of a shooting.
Willis was subsequently discovered by police lying on the 200 block of Rural Street sidewalk. After being transported to IU Methodist Hospital, she was declared dead.
Willis was involved in a disturbance prior to the shooting, according to the investigators. According to an Aug. 28 press release from IMPD, she was walking when shots were fired.
Detectives identified a suspicious vehicle using license plate readers while conducting their investigation. Nelson was recognized as a suspect when the car was later found.
On Friday, Nelson was hauled into custody. He was being held without bond at the Marion County jail.
As of Sunday, Nelson’s court appearance was not scheduled.
