On I-94, an SUV chase results in a flipped semi
Gary, Indiana – According to the Lake County sheriff, an attempted traffic stop on I-94 on Wednesday led to a chase involving a helicopter in northwest Indiana and a collision that resulted in a semi-truck flipping.
The driver of the 21-year-old Ford SUV and a passenger were taken into custody following a crash, according to a social media post by Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr. The people that were arrested were not named in the post.
A big bag containing allegedly illegal drugs was seized by police, according to the sheriff’s office.
An officer with the Lake County Sheriff’s Department attempted to stop the SUV on I-94 westbound in the Chesterton area sometime before 10 a.m. on Monday. The driver had been seen breaking lanes and speeding, according to the sheriff.
The sheriff’s post said, “The officer began to pursue the SUV as it continued west on I-94 and later north on State Road 49 in Porter County. The vehicle eventually headed west on Route 20 then reentered I-94 heading east back to Lake County. Near the Ripley Street exit in Lake Station, the fleeing driver caused a semi to lose control and flip onto its side.”
An arm was hurt in the collision by the semi-truck driver.
The post said, “The Lake County Sheriff’s Department Aviation Unit helicopter tracked the suspect vehicle from the sky as the suspect vehicle left the roadway eventually stopping at an embankment.”
Indiana State Police will look into the collision, according to the sheriff’s post.
