Prior to the start of the new school year, Indianapolis families received thousands of backpacks
Indianapolis, Indiana – A nearby nonprofit is assisting families in preparing for the upcoming school year as the start of classes is quickly approaching.
The Indianapolis Urban League’s annual Back-to-School Backpack Giveaway and Block Party was held on Saturday.
Students in elementary, middle, and high schools received more than 3000 bags stuffed with school necessities. Free health exams, haircuts, live music, and entertainment were also provided at the event.
It is crucial, according to the event’s organizers, to bring the neighborhood together for a gathering like this given the escalating expenses of school supplies across the country.
“Resource like this count,” said Tony Mason, the president and CEO of the Indianapolis Urban League. “Every dollar counts in the household where they’re trying to figure out not only how to pay bills but how to put food on the table every day. So, if us supplying these resources makes things a little easier for families, then we are doing our part.”
Within the next weeks, many schools in central Indiana will begin. Classes at the Indianapolis Public Schools begin on Monday.
