The first “contactless” hotel in the state is located in Madison, Indiana

Madison, Indiana – A hotel that might be a symbol of the future has recently opened in a community in Indiana that honors the past. A completely “contactless” hotel can be found in Madison, near the Ohio River.

Instead of going through a front desk, guests check in using their phones. They then use the in-room technology and apps for any demands that may come up during their stay. Overall, it’s a completely private experience that can be customized to the guest’s preferences.

“Travelers are looking for a convenient and efficient experience with as little human friction as possible,” Matt Chandler, owner and operator of The Chandler Hotel.

Located on Second Street in Madison’s historic downtown, the hotel opened its doors early last year. According to Chandler, it’s the first of its sort in the state and was created with a high-tech user experience in mind.

“We knew that Millennials and Gen Z, in particular, prefer the simplicity of touchless check-ins and digital room access,” explained Chandler. “It also eliminates the need to fully staff the hotel and those cost savings go right back into the customer experience.”

There is room for some controversy regarding the claim of being the “first” contactless hotel.
Several large chains, including Hyatt, Hilton, Marriott, and others, provide automated check-in procedures as well. These systems use on phone-activated technology and unmanned kiosks. In contrast to The Chandler, however, those establishments still primarily have front desk staff on hand for visitors who would like stick to more conventional procedures.

Depending on the date, rooms at The Chandler might cost anywhere from less than $100 to more than $200.

The Chandler’s owners admit that their methods are similar to those of short-term rental services like Airbnb or Vrbo, but they highlight one significant distinction: visitors may call for a genuine staff member at the touch of a screen.
