Indianapolis, Indiana – Friday’s outdoor concert for the Indiana Black Expo summer celebration drew sizable numbers to downtown’s American Legion Mall.

R&B music luminaries The O’jays, Stephanie Mills, El DeBarge, and Howard Hewett, among others, performed for the audience.

Some people showed up hours in advance. For the important event, some even went from beyond the state.

“We traveled from Louisville, Kentucky on a bus,” said concertgoer Anthony Brown.

The goal of the event, according to the volunteers organizing it, is to foster community and celebrate variety.

“Indiana Black Expo is for everyone to be a part of this opportunity,” said volunteer Regina Marsh.

For more than two decades, Marsh has contributed to the event’s planning. She claimed that the event on Friday is about more than just the live music.

“We have healthcare testing for people that will go on in the Convention Center this weekend,” Marsh.

The musical events offered everyone an opportunity to unwind, unwind, and enjoy excellent company.

“It’s just good to see everybody come together and get along peacefully. The community gets to listen to good music,” said concertgoer Myisha Foster.

All law enforcement agencies were working hard to ensure that everyone felt safe and could engage with the community.

“We know that everyone is out here to have a good time. I love when people come to talk to us and ask us questions. We love that interaction with folks,” said Captain Fred Ilnicki with IMPD.

There will be activities at the Indiana Black Expo until Sunday.
