Indianapolis, Indiana – Yvonda Bean will take over as the Indianapolis Housing Agency’s new CEO in mid-February, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the city of Indianapolis announced Tuesday.

Bean formerly held the positions of president of nonprofit affiliates SC Affordable Housing Initiatives and Columbia Housing and Development, as well as CEO of Columbia Housing and Cayce Housing, according to a news release. Bean is anticipated to start her new job on February 17.

Felicia Gaither, HUD’s deputy assistant secretary for field operations for the Office of Public and Indian Housing, stated in the statement, “We are encouraged by the appointment of Yvonda A. Bean as its new CEO in HUD’s role overseeing the Indianapolis Housing Agency.” As we attempt to resurrect this agency, Ms. Bean’s demonstrated capacity to guide agencies through difficulties and attain operational excellence will be essential. We have no doubt that under her direction, the organization’s goal of giving Indianapolis citizens safe, high-quality, and reasonably priced housing will be strengthened.

According to officials, Bean has established a “distinguished career marked by a strong record of operational excellence and a resident-focused, HUD-compliant approach.”

In the statement, Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett expressed his satisfaction with Yvonda A. Bean’s appointment as the CEO of the Indianapolis Housing Agency. “I’m excited to see how her more than 20 years of experience in public housing, which included helping two struggling housing agencies recover, will now be applied to support the people of IHA.”

This comes after HUD and the city of Indianapolis reached a cooperative agreement in April 2024 for the agency to oversee the Indianapolis Housing Agency. In 2022, the city made its initial request for HUD’s aid.

Bean stated in the statement, “I am immensely honored to have been chosen to serve as IHA’s new CEO.” “My ideals and enthusiasm for establishing fair housing and economic possibilities for underserved communities are perfectly aligned with the organization’s objective. The idea that housing is a right, not a privilege, and that EVERYONE should have access to safe, affordable housing has been the foundation of my work. In order to support IHA’s meaningful work, I am excited to collaborate with HUD, the City, the Board, the IHA team, residents, and community partners.
