Indianapolis, Indiana – The U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Indiana, Zachary Myers, announced his resignation on Tuesday.

Myers recently submitted his resignation and will “conclude his service” on Saturday, per a news release. Then, in accordance with the Vacancies Reform operate, First Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan Childress will operate as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana.

According to the press release, Myers, who was born in Indianapolis, was the district’s first Black U.S. Attorney. Since November 2021, Myers has been in the role.

The office has pushed forward cases involving the most serious offenses and criminals under his leadership, according to the announcement. Along with increasing its resources, the agency has collaborated closely with law enforcement partners at the federal, state, and municipal levels.

Among the primary subjects the office has addressed under Myers’ leadership are:

• Combatting gun violence and other violent crimes
• Disrupting the trafficking of deadly drugs
• Fighting hate and discrimination
• Protecting children from sexual exploitation and trafficking
• Holding public officials accountable for violations of public trust
• Combatting frauds against individuals, businesses and the government

According to the statement, Myers stated, “It has been an honor to lead this office of gifted professionals who work tirelessly every day to make the public safer, hold lawbreakers accountable, and ensure that our rights are protected.” “The rule of law does not operate on its own. “Alongside our outstanding law enforcement partners, we sought to maximize our impact for the public’s benefit and always strove to do the right thing the right way,” Myers added.

It takes the sacrifice and hard work of public servants working with dedication and justice. “I am incredibly pleased of what we have done together, and I have no doubt that the office will keep doing amazing work for the people we serve. I am extremely appreciative of the Attorney General, Senator Young, Former Senator Braun, and Congressman Carson for their support, as well as the President’s nomination. The honor of a lifetime has been serving on behalf of the United States.
