Warnings about potential severe winter weather in Central Indiana

Indianapolis, Indiana – Significant winter weather, including the potential for a winter storm, is predicted for Central Indiana during the next few days. Bone-chilling temperatures could result from this, raising questions about safety and health.

An Eskenazi Health press release states that extended exposure to colds can result in hypothermia or other dangerous illnesses. Frostbite, a freezing-related ailment that can result in irreversible harm, is also frequent, particularly among the elderly, homeless, and outdoor workers.

Brett Hartman, the medical director of the Richard M. Fairbanks Burn Center at Eskenazi Health, stated in the release that “most of us can easily avoid cold weather and frostbite injuries, but we see too many of these unfortunate cases each year due to tragic carelessness, lack of proper planning, and neglect.” “The best thing we can all do in these situations is to stay inside, and when we must go outside, it is essential that we dress appropriately for the cold and take every precaution to only be outside for brief periods of time.”

The statement emphasized that around 70% of injuries caused by snow or ice occur in motor vehicle accidents and warned that severe winter weather and heavy snow could also present major risks to the roads.

Tyler Stepsis, the medical director of Eskenazi Health’s Michael & Susan Smith Emergency Department, stated in the statement that it is still crucial to be ready as the winter weather sets in Central Indiana. “You and your loved ones can stay safe during unforeseen emergencies by using a winter emergency kit for your car and your house, as well as by getting portable mobile chargers, booster cables, flashlights, first aid kits, and supplies to stay warm.” To make sure you’re ready for this winter, be sure to check the forecast.

The following advice was given by officials to help people remain warm and lower their risk of illness during the winter and during extreme weather conditions:

• Heat your home properly and safely, using certified space heaters and fireplaces when necessary
• Drink plenty of warm beverages
• Avoid alcoholic and caffeinated drinks, as they may contribute to a decrease in body temperature and cause the body to lose heat at a more rapid rate
• Wear a hat, scarf, and insulated gloves or mittens. Layered clothes should also be worn to reduce the chance of frostbite
• Avoid overexertion when participating in outdoor chores or activities.
