Mayor of Fort Wayne will start treating late-stage stomach cancer
Fort Wayne, Indiana – Tom Henry, the Democratic mayor of Fort Wayne, revealed his stomach cancer diagnosis on Monday.
The announcement follows the death of his wife, Cindy S. Henry, on January 20 at the age of 67, following a year-long battle with pancreatic cancer.
The 72-year-old native of Fort Wayne assumed office as mayor in 2008, and in November, he was elected to a historic fifth four-year term. He began serving on the Fort Wayne City Council in 1984 and held the position until becoming mayor.
“My initial scans have shown that the cancer is currently spreading through my lymph nodes and other organs,” the mayor said in a news statement issued on the website of the local government. That being said, my prognosis is not particularly promising. Next week, though, I’ll start my chemotherapy treatments.
“I assure you that I have complete confidence in the team in charge of my care and in my ability to carry out my term as your mayor for as long as God sees fit.
“My promise to all of you still stands – to move this city forward, together.
“I also promise to make all of you aware of any, ongoing health updates as often as possible.
“Thank you for this opportunity to be honest with all of you. I am asking though for privacy and prayers while I navigate this difficult situation.
“Your trust, understanding, and kindness continue to mean the world to myself and my family.”
Fort Wayne, in northeast Indiana, is the state’s second-largest city with a population of nearly 268,000, according to STATS Indiana.
“Mayor Henry has been a pillar of our community and our party for nearly four decades. The news today regarding his health and the fight that he and his family now face is truly heartbreaking, but we know that they will face it with the same vigor that they have shown in fighting for everyone in Fort Wayne throughout the years. “The prayers of everyone in the Third District regardless of politics are with the Henry family tonight and throughout the coming weeks and months as he faces this fight courageously.” Democratic Party of Indiana’s 3rd Congressional District
