Bloomington, Indiana – According to a press statement from the City of Bloomington, a boil water advisory is in place in Monroe County until Monday morning at 9 a.m. There isn’t a public emergency.

At the water treatment facility on Friday, sand meant for a new filter leaked out of its tank. When the leak was contained, personnel examined the water and discovered that its turbidity levels exceeded federal guidelines.

The Environmental Protection Agency states that one way to quantify the clarity of water is by turbidity. According to the statement, high turbidity levels make the water murky and raise the possibility of disease-causing organisms in the water. The staff anticipates that by Monday morning at nine a.m., the levels will be back to normal, having not discovered any pollutants.

Residents are advised by the City of Bloomington Utilities to boil water for drinking, cooking, and dental hygiene at least two minutes before using it. It is not necessary to boil water that is utilized for other purposes.

If people see murky water, they should run cold water from a bathtub or sink until the faucet produces clear water.

In addition, residents have access to drinking water from various sources or can buy bottled water.

The Indiana University dining halls sell bottled water, and the Starbucks located in McNutt Quad is closed until the alert is revoked.
