Free tax assistance is provided to residents of the Indianapolis area

Indianapolis, Indiana – Residents in a number of counties in central Indiana are eligible for free tax assistance.
The Indy Free Tax Prep program is available to individuals and families who earned less than $66,000 per year in 2024. Locations in the counties of Boone, Delaware, Hendricks, Marion, and Morgan offer the service.
Those who qualify for assistance can schedule an appointment here. Amvets Post 99 and John Boner Neighborhood Centers in Indianapolis will take walk-in clients on Saturdays during specific hours.
The program has been run by the United Way of Central Indiana since 2015. In that period, volunteers have assisted with the preparation of around 49,000 tax returns.
The John Boner Neighborhood Center in Indianapolis hosted the first day of Indy Free Tax Prep on Wednesday.
For simple tax preparation, several tax preparation services do charge exorbitant fees. Carla James, the center’s director of basic needs and systems integration, stated, “We do ours entirely for free, and our volunteers receive annual IRS certification.
Over 4,900 tax forms were prepared by volunteers last year, assisting taxpayers in claiming over $4.4 million in federal refunds.
MyFreeTaxes.com is available to those who would prefer to file online and have a family income of $79,000 or less.
