Indianapolis, Indiana – New designs for the West Washington Street Bridge over Little Eagle Creek on the city’s near-west side have been approved by the Indianapolis Department of Public Works.

Despite early plans to restore the historic landmark, the bridge is now scheduled to be dismantled after crews discovered that more than 70% of the arch and spandrel walls were eroding, according to an Indianapolis DPW news release.

According to Indy DPW, the decision to demolish the bridge was taken in order to guarantee that it would be safe for vehicles to cross once it was finished. Next week is when demolition is anticipated to begin. According to Indy DPW, the bridge should be reopened to the public in the fall of this year.

According to previous temporary Indy DPW Director Sam Beres, “Indy DPW understands the disruptive nature of construction.” Nonetheless, we are certain that the complete reconstruction is best for public safety. Furthermore, if feasible, we will collaborate with contractors to expedite work.

It is anticipated that the $5 million project won’t be finished until the end of 2025. The project will include new sidewalks and railings, a precast concrete arch, restored pavement, and new foundations.

While construction is occurring, locals are advised to avoid the area if they are passing by.
