Housing for workforce development is coming to Meridian Highland
Indianapolis, Indiana – Ground is being broken on a new workforce development housing project by a local group.
To realize the aim, Near North Development Corporation is collaborating with other organizations.
Patricia Warner, a longtime local, told me that her father once owned a motel and motor lodge at the intersection of 22nd and Illinois, with an emphasis on providing lower-class housing for the community.
Warner remarked, “I can turn around and look over there and still see it, even though it’s not there.”
The Near North Development Corporation is now across the street and wants to give that to the neighborhood.
Prioritizing environmental remediation is necessary to guarantee that the soil is free of pollutants.
According to Brian Carman, president of the organization, “the near north side has a long history of dry cleaners, so people wearing a lot of suits back in the 1900s.” “This process is all about eliminating the chemicals that seep into the ground for safe and healthy housing.”
They’re cutting this procedure down from years to just three months so they can start construction in January.
Anybody earning between 80 and 120 percent of the area median income is eligible to purchase a townhome.
“We want to serve a diverse range of incomes, and we believe that a diverse housing stock should reflect that,” stated Carman.
Locals, including the barbershop next door, All in the Wrists, turned out to assist with the groundbreaking.
As a native of Meridian Highland, owner Marvin Taylor thinks this will allow a large number of his clientele to reside near his store and the city center.
It is an incredible chance for individuals from all socioeconomic backgrounds and ethnicities to live here. “I’m thrilled,” Taylor remarked.
It is anticipated that the first three townhomes will be finished by the end of 2025.
