Indianapolis, Indiana – The Blue Line Bus Rapid Transit project by IndyGo has been fully designed by authorities.

IndyGo describes the Blue Line as a “massive” infrastructure enhancement project that will address rainwater drainage, pedestrian amenities, traffic safety, and road conditions.

“Achieving a 100% design for the Blue Line is a significant accomplishment,” stated Jennifer Pyrz, President and CEO of IndyGo. “Over the past few years, we’ve put a lot of effort into adapting and making sure that everyone using the corridor—drivers, pedestrians, or riders—will benefit from this project. Now that everyone is safer, we can move on to a new phase of development and start building a stronger bus service connecting the airport, downtown, and our historic East Washington Street communities.

The following are the anticipated upgrades from the final design:

• 9.7 miles of new or replaced sidewalks
• 30 station platforms
o Station amenities: Covered waiting areas, level boarding, ticket vending machines, real-time arrival signs, security cameras, and snow melt
o Station spacing: 0.5 – 1 mile
• 2.3 miles of new or refreshed crosswalks
• 359 new or upgraded ADA curb ramps
• 46.5 lane miles of roadway resurfacing
• 7.5 miles of separated storm sewer drainage
• 63 new or upgraded traffic signals

It is anticipated that construction will start in early 2025. The Blue Line is anticipated to be finished sometime in 2027–2028, per IndyGo.

The third of IndyGo’s three proposed Bus Rapid Transit routes will be the 24-mile Blue Line.

It will essentially take the role of Route 8, which runs along Washington Street between Cumberland and the Indianapolis International Airport and is one of IndyGo’s busiest routes.
