How many veterans live in Indiana ?
Indiana – According to data from the US Census Bureau, veterans make up about 6% of the country’s population. However, veterans make up an even greater portion of the population in some states.
However, what percentage of Hoosiers are veterans?
More than 15.8 million Americans served in the past, according to the Census Bureau’s most recent American Community Survey. It should come as no surprise that the states with the largest populations in the country—Texas, Florida, and California—have the highest concentration of veterans.
There are more than a million veterans in each state, but Texas has the most, with around 1.4 million.
Less than 50,000 people are veterans in four states (Vermont, Wyoming, Rhode Island, and North Dakota) and the District of Columbia.
Veterans make up about 6% of the population in the Hoosier State, which is similar to the national average. According to the data, Indiana is home to 61,454 veterans.
The interactive map that follows displays the proportion of veterans in each state as well as the number of citizens who have served: With almost 10.5% of its population being veterans, Alaska has the highest proportion of former service members. An estimated 23,000 of them, or around 42%, served between September 2001 and the present, according to census data. During the first ten years of the Gulf War, around 16,000 served.
Although Wyoming has one of the lowest percentages of veterans, about 9% of its citizens have served in the military.
Less than 4 percent of people in the District of Columbia, New Jersey, and New York are veterans.
Additionally, according to Census data, over 4.4 million of the 15.8 million veterans in the country are 75 years of age or older. Many of them soldiers likely fought in the Korean War or World War II. Only about 91,000 and 548,000 veterans of past conflicts are still in the United States.
According to Census data, more than 5.2 million veterans fought during the Vietnam War. About 4.4 million of the next largest group of veterans served throughout the past 20 years.
