Chesterton, Indiana – The Chesterton Police Department has issued a warning to the local populace following a phone hoax in which a man pretended to be their police chief.

The victim, a woman who lived in Westwood Manor, noticed on her caller ID that the number to the Chesterton Police Department was being displayed.

The man introduced himself as Chief Tim Richardson, although she characterized his voice as having a “Indian accent.”

According to the police, Richardson spoke with a dialect that may be classified as “Flat Indiana.”

The man informed her that he needed to talk to her about a complaint that had been filed against her regarding the Department of Homeland Security.

According to the authorities, the man hung up when the woman questioned him about whether or not he knew someone who had previously worked for the department.

“It is worth noting that it is relatively easy nowadays to manipulate caller ID information, making it appear as though you are receiving a call from a specific phone number,” Assistant Chief Francisco Rodriguez said. “Unfortunately, the resident did not engage in conversation long enough to determine the nature of the scam this caller was attempting to perpetrate. Nonetheless, she wanted us to be aware of this call. If we receive multiple reports of similar incidents, I will promptly inform everyone.”
