Thundersnow detected in central Indiana

Published

Indianapolis, Indiana — The snow began to pile up across central Indiana early on Wednesday morning, and within a few heavy snow bands, lightning was observed on the Storm Track 8 radar.

This would suggest that there was thundersnow in at least some regions.

The first lightning strike occurred in Johnson County at approximately 8:12 a.m. on Wednesday, and the second lightning strike took place close to Elwood at approximately 9:36 a.m. on Wednesday.

The phenomena known as thundersnow is relatively uncommon. It takes place when there is a band of heavy snow that contains a trace degree of instability that is capable of triggering lightning and thunder.
