Mayor Hogsett announces location of new animal shelter in Indianapolis
Indianapolis, Indiana – Indianapolis Animal Care Services’ new headquarters was revealed by Mayor Joe Hogsett on Thursday.
The 5001 E. Raymond St. location of the new proposed site was once owned by Clearstream. Earlier ideas for the shelter included the Sherman Park campus, the site of the former RCA factory, but those plans were shelved.
“With a new location, we are able to accelerate progress on a new facility while continuing our remediation and development commitments on the Near Eastside,” said Mayor Joe Hogsett. “This new site will bring a community resource to a vacant lot while serving Indy zip codes with some of the highest animal care needs in the city.”
The division that oversees the city’s present animal shelter on Harding Street, Indianapolis Animal Care Services, is led by Jefferson Shreve, a Republican candidate for mayor, who stated earlier this month that the city needs a new facility and that Hogsett was ignoring their demands.
The new shelter’s ZIP code, 46203, is reportedly the second most popular in Marion County historically for stray pickups and animal control-related services, according to the city.
