Indianapolis, Indiana – After unexpectedly becoming unwell during a travel from the Dominican Republic to North Carolina, an Indiana woman passed away in late February.

Friends and family recognized the woman on social media as 41-year-old Stefanie Smith of Danville.

In a press release on February 28, the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force stated that a commercial flight that was scheduled to arrive in Charlotte, North Carolina, from the Dominican Republic had to be rerouted to the islands due to a passenger named Smith becoming ill during the journey.

Air Traffic Control called the police at 6:12 p.m. to request medical help for Smith, mentioning that she was receiving CPR from someone on the aircraft.

After being called for help, Smith was taken to a hospital where she eventually passed away.
